Last week, I showed off the State Boys from the American Boys spin-off The States Show in full humanized glory, having evolved visually from the little jelly baby blobs I’d originally drawn them as. That exhibition was the first on this blog to be fully made up of digitally-drawn artwork, of which there will be a lot more in the future.

So why are they all wearing pajamas in this drawing, you wonder? It was actually part of a self-initiated and imposed art challenge throughout September 2009, called “Totally State-Tastic!” (which is the subtitle on the drawing). During this art challenge, I drew all the State Boys in nightwear, either having sleepover parties, entering the wonderful wacky world of their dreams (as with Nevada Goes to Outer Space, or Maryland & Maine in Marshmallow Land), or just showing off their PJs.

Here’s the drawing which started all that: every single one of the State Boys wearing pajamas (they’re actually more like leotards or onesies, but are onesies sleepwear?) I based the colors of their pajamas on their normal outfits, and obviously identified each one with their postal abbreviation, as with all drawings featuring them.

From left to right:

First row:

  • District of Columbia (D.C.)
  • Alaska
  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Florida

Second row:

  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Maine

Third row:

  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • Nevada
  • New York (State)

Fourth row:

  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Vermont
  • Washington (State)

Fifth row:

  • Wisconsin
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

The reason that Wisconsin, WV and Wyoming are so small and squished is because I was trying to get all the states to fit on just one piece of A4 paper, which is a common problem I keep running into every now and then.

Even my sister Melissa got into the States Show pajama groove a few good times:

Ohio, Oklahoma & Oregon In Their Bedroom

She even drew The States Show airing on the TV, which would technically mean the State Boys are actors and are watching their own performances on their production. Which would technically make The States Show a reality show. (I’m running into a metaverse conundrum here…)
