You’re invited… to the wedding of the year!

But I’m not talking about Harry and Megan. πŸ˜‰

I am, of course, talking about Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe. After five years of going head-over-heels for each other (and becoming Garnet in the process), these two are finally getting married!

Ruby & Sapphire Wedding Outfits

Here’s the happy couple in their outfits for the big day. While Ruby is more aggressive and Sapphire is cooler and calmer in their stances and personalities, their outfits are the total opposites. Ruby wears a flowing white wedding dress with a white headband and purple flowers, while Sapphire wears a dark navy-blue tuxedo with a purple flower also pinned to her lapel. This could be an attempt to mix it up a little by the creator Rebecca Sugar, who is passionate about advancing LGBTQ+ representation and breaking stereotypes.

And here’s the couple on their big day itself! They’ve brought almost the whole gang to the ceremony – Steven, his father Greg, his best friend Connie, Amethyst, Pearl, Peridot – and new character Bismuth (seen directly behind Pearl). She debuted in her eponymous episode during the last season, but was mysteriously absent until it came around to Ruby and Sapphire getting married.

I used Autodesk SketchBook’s many stamp brushes – specifically the Transparent Sakura stamp from the Manga Stamps set – to create the confetti. I used shades of red and blue to represent Ruby and Sapphire’s newly-forged marriage, with the darker hues representing Garnet – two becoming one.

Despite being only five years old, Steven Universe has already made history. Thanks to Ruby and Sapphire, it’s now become the first-ever TV cartoon to show an LGBTQ+ marriage, something which would’ve been unthinkable 20, 30 or even 50 years ago.

May Ruby and Sapphire’s marriage be a long, happy and prosperous one made of love.
